Essence of series out there. Tipps for what to watch and much more

Drama

Suits

Suits is a legal drama from USA Network starring Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht. Suits follows college drop-out Mike Ross, who accidentally lands a job with one of New York’s best legal closers, Harvey Specter. They soon become a winning team with Mike’s raw talent and photographic memory, and Mike soon reminds Harvey of why he went into the field of law in the first place. (taken from here)

Oh another series that will probably fail. But this one is fun to watch. I’ve waited long for a new show and quite frankly I got a little annoyed by the cooking shows, real life tv shows etc. I mean is it so hard to produce a decent show with an interesting plot that doesn’t include a government agency, desperate housewives or another friends clone?  Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes I like to watch that but there are just no alternatives anymore.  Just junk food TV. I’m sick of it … I want a show to have at least a new twist on old topics. Then the constant product placement for the latest thing, like iPhones or the especially annoying type “Suits”. Since Marlboro has found a way to do product placement in series like Mad Man (or does anyone else wonder why we have this trend to film in the History (Midnight in Paris) ) nothing shocks me anymore. But “Suits”, really?

And as you would suspect the plot of “suits” is a lawyer company. A smartass (photographic memory) gets hired and his mentor tells him to buy a better suit. That joke never gets old in the series. But if you cut the bs, the show is at least a little bit fun to watch. I was surprised that no animals or vampires appear, because apparently that are the key success factors for the latest movies.

So here it is, a glimpse on what to expect:

By the way, I understand the need of attention, but why do all those series announcer scream at me?

And sorry for the post, but that had to come out.

CHAOS

CBS presents this new comedy drama procedural. Rogue CIA operatives succeed in their special operations around the globe despite incompetence and political infighting at the home office. (taken from here)

It’s the Pentagons answer to Wikileaks one could think. The last CIA Team that can do what they want. And of course they only do good things. One episode is about a CIA operative who got fed up with the low salary and sold unimportant secrets to others. (reminds you of something?)

With that in mind it is a classic spy story. Young “new guy” gets punked and is after that a team member. There are quite some similarities  to Burn Notice and I promise we will see some “burned” action.

I could not help but noticing that all the actors are tiny and the tough guy is kind of a joke.

But despite it’s flaws it is still worthy of watching … and I forgot something … it is with  James Murray.

The Cape

In fictional Palm City former cop Vince Faraday is framed for murder. Believed to be dead, he takes on the persona of his son’s favorite comic book superhero ‘The Cape’ to clear his name and reunite with his family. Together with a group of former carnies, he fights against the corrupt police, politicians, and ARK Corporation. Unlike the comics, costumed heroes and villains, such as Chess and Scales, do not have superpowers. Fearless investigative blogger Orwell joins in the fight not just with words, as she tends to get violent. The Cape comes from Universal Media Studios and the producing team of Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. (taken from here)

Too much you might ask given the picture in this article. The Answer is:  a definitive maybe! The concept is simple: Man gets convicted for a crime he did not do … Man decides it’s payback time … Man finds a cape … Man has some kind of a  gay superhero fantasy … Man trains for 2 days … Man IS a superhero.

That being said it is really hard to tell if the show is going to continue because of the many cancellations on NBC lately. I guess you should give it a shot because the interesting part is the whole … I am a superhero but I do need a psychiatrist thing.  That could be interesting. David Lyons plays the hero.

The bad boy played by James Frain comes of a little to unrealistic when considering the effort that was taken to create a hero you can relate to. I guess the money ran out 😉

I’ll watch how it evolves and hope that Orwell gets a lot of  screen time  ;D

Tell me what you think.

Dexter

Based on Jeff Lindsay’s novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter this crime thriller follows Dexter Morgan. Dexter is a forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Dade Police Department. He is the main support for his sister. He has a steady girlfriend, with two kids who adore him. He also has an active “night life”. Based on a code instilled in him by his foster father, Harry, he hunts down people who have escaped justice and makes sure they don’t get away with a crime again. (taken from here)

Ok for some time now I didn’t discover new series. The new Hype series Spartacus – Blood and Sand is pretty nice in the fighting scenes but you feel like you are watching a porno. I don’t like it but if you were into 300 you probably will.

I used to watch a lot of series but right now I feel that not much new and authentic is comming around. Therefore I gave Dexter a try. I watched one episode some time ago and decided it’s not my kind of show. But I was mistaken. My flaw was that I didn’t start from the beginning but just zapped into 2nd season. Now I think it’s a decent show that can be watched if you run out of series and don’t like to watch TV.

Please send my new and interesting new series if you find them … I’m drying out 🙂

happy carnival

Leverage

Meet Nathan Ford, a former insurance investigator who spent his professional career dedicated to the company that he recovered millions in stolen goods for. This same insurance company would refuse a medical claim for his son that would take the life of the innocent child.

Unemployed and teetering on the edge, Nate is approached about a Robin Hood-like scheme. He enlists the help of the best thieves and grifters in the business, and with their help he steals from the rich and gives to the poor, to help balance the crooks in high power positions. He and his team help provide…leverage. (taken from here)

I like this series because it somehow reminds me of my childhood when I was watching Robin Hood. A nice little piece I’d recommend

V

V New Series

When UFO’s place themselves over major cities around the world and claim they are here to help Humans, different characters become suspicious of the ‘V’s (visitors) real intentions and try to investigate what is really going on before it is too late so they can claim Victory (V)!

Based on the original 1980s miniseries about alien lizards visiting Earth, this ABC sci-fi project is the brainchild of The 4400 co-creator/exec producer Scott Peters. (taken from here)

I was just able to view the Pilot of this new show.  It is the all time classic …. Alien come to earth and claim they are good … there is a mystery about their real mission … and so on.

It’s the classic sci-fi move and I like it. But I have to say that while I was watching I was always thinking …. great story but ….. Independence Day …..

I’m curious how it will evolve and I hope that it can convince me because I liked the original series.

White Collar

white_collar-show

This is a new show that is slated to begin on Oct. 23 on USA at 10 PM. It is about a convicted white-collar criminal who winds up working for the FBI man who caught him. To stay out of prison, Neal offers to help the FBI capture other white-collar criminals using his expertise. (taken from here)

I just finished watching the pilot of this new show and was surprised. I found it to be quite pleasing. Again a show that gives us what we always wanted … a criminal mastermind and a FBI superhero working together to capture other criminals. Great pilot and I think high potential for a long series.

But is it just me or are the “good” criminals always looking and acting alike. Charming, art liking, smart etc….  They wouldn’t have any problem making money at all ….. but I think it’s just me 😉

Merlin

merlin-tv

This 13-part drama series puts a new spin on the story of the infamous sorcerer, Merlin. Set in the mythical City of Camelot, the story follows young Merlin’s dangerous journey as he comes face to face with legendary and fantastical characters.(taken from here)

Here’s something for the younger ones. I noticed this series just a few days ago and it reminded myself that in my childhood I always wondered how Merlin evolved. So it came as no surprise to me that there is a TV series lifting that now. It is kind of cheesy and to be honest not my favorite show, but if you just finished reading the Arthur’s Saga or like that kind of stuff you might enjoy it. And the thing that makes it interesting is that although Merlin uses Magic, the focus is not entirely on that aspect.

Flash Forward

flashforward

Dubbed ABC’s ‘companion series to Lost, this drama project is based on Robert J. Sawyer’s sci-fi novel of the same name. The plot centers around an eerie, chaotic vision of the future after a mysterious event makes everyone on Earth lose consciousness. Later, as people start waking up, the world starts changing because people know their future. (taken from here)

This is it. The next big show after LOST (which I personally hated). Inspired by the Dr.Who spin-off Torchwood (Children of Earth) I guess 🙂 . I watched the first episodes and I have to admit it is quite compelling. Give it a try if you like Lost, Children of Earth, or similar stuff. It’s a CIA is going to figure out what is wrong with the world and then save us all series.

Burn Notice

burn_notice-show

Michael Westen receives a “burn notice” while on assignment in Nigeria. Dumped in his Miami hometown with no money or resources to his name, Michael works as a freelance spy/private investigator to fund his investigation into who burned him and why.
Burn Notice is produced by FOX Television Studios in association with Fuse Entertainment and filmed on location in Miami. (taken from here)

Ever wondered how a spy gets fired? In Burn Notice you can  see how and what a spy does against that. (Building a fake Letter Bomb to get in touch with his superiors)

I just finished the first episode and I it looks like a lot of fun.

House

Dr_House

House (aka House MD), from executive producers Paul Attanasio, Katie Jacobs, David Shore, and Bryan Singer is a new take on mystery, where the villain is a medical malady and the hero is an irreverent, controversial doctor who trusts no one, least of all his patients.

Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is devoid of bedside manner and wouldn’t even talk to his patients if he could get away with it. Dealing with his own constant physical pain, he uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a maverick physician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts have afforded him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he’s a brilliant diagnostician who loves the challenges of the medical puzzles he must solve in order to save lives. (taken from here)

When I was just a little boy my father, a doctor, gave me his operating stuff to play with …. brain driller, retractor etc. … it got me comfortable with that kind of thing. So when I watch medical series I’m always reminded of the good times as a child. House is an ass and believe me he is the role model for a lot of doctors. A lot of them live in their own world. The fist few seasons were quite realistic in terms of medicine but the older the series got the more unrealistic it became. But I like the change from realism to drama/fiction. They did a good job and it isn’t boring yet. The new season just began and is worth checking out. Cheers

Caprica

caprica

Set 58 years prior to the events of Battlestar Galactica (2003), this prequel will explore the lives of two families: the Graystones – include father Daniel, a computer genius, mother Amanda, a brilliant surgeon and their daughter, Zoe – and the Adamas. The two families are on opposing sides of the decision to create the Cylons: intelligent robots that will one day rebel and nearly annihilate the residents of Caprica. Touted as “television’s first science fiction family saga,” Caprica is from Battlestar Galactica (2003) executive producers, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. The show is produced by NBC Universal Television.(taken from here)

It is the sequel  of Battlestar Galactica and I like it very much although, the style of the series is completely different. It plays in a city, Caprica, and describes the creation of the Cylons through a mastermind and his daughter. It’s a drama series and if you liked space fights you have to check again. Try the Pilot and see for yourself but beware you might not like it on first sight. The show starts 2010-01-21    that is in 117 Days from now.

Firefly

firefly

Firefly is set five hundred years from today in a new planetary system after humanity abandons “Earth That Was”. Under the leadership of Malcolm Reynolds, a renegade who fought against the new unified central government (the “Alliance”), the crew of the Firefly-class vessel Serenity struggles to survive any way they can. They fly between the border planets to keep away from the Alliance and below its radar. This series was described as a “science fiction western” but is different from other space-based shows as it features no aliens. (taken from here)

Think of a western in space with no aliens and little tech/geeky stuff. Nice concept and worth checking out. The series led to a movie called Serenity

Rescue Me

rescue-meFrom the creators and executive producers of The Job comes Rescue Me, a dramedy that centers on the inner workings of Engine 62, a New York City firehouse, and the personal and emotional battles of its members in a post-9/11 world.
The show focuses on Tommy Gavin, the senior firefighter whose life is in turmoil as he copes with the stresses and fears of his job as well the separation from his wife Janet. Tommy moves into a house across the street from her to stay close to their three children and keep an eye on her. The stresses and fears of his job are manifested through conversations with his dead cousin Jimmy Keefe, a former firefighter, as well as the haunting memories of people he has watched perish on the job.
The remaining heroes of Ladder 62 include Chief Jerry Reilly who, despite being called “The Good Chief,” has a serious gambling problem and bets on everything, even Tommy’s divorce. Sean Garrity is a young, handsome guy who is easier to look at than hold a conversation with. Franco Rivera, a cocky, Puerto Rican ladies man, is Tommy’s confidant who lives life in the fast lane. Lt. Kenny “Lou” Shea is a man’s man who secretly writes poetry and uses it as a way to release his emotional frustrations. Mike Silletti, “the probie,” is subject to numerous initiation pranks as he starts his career as a firefighter. (taken from here)

Dennis Leary  is a well known US comedian and his comedy comes from a deep arrogance he cultivated. Despite his comedic past, in the show he just uses his destructive self to fill out the role of Tommy Gavin. A 9/11 firefighter who has to deal with his job and the society. His best friend died in 9/11. That and other things create daemons and the show perfectly shows the development of a hero to an asshole who is a great firefighter but bad in everything else. His crew is supportive but destructive and the characters develop their own problems.

To contrast that rather dark plot the makers threw in funny bits of the firefighter life …. chicks …. great inappropriate talk …. chicks ….. and ….. chicks.

One of my all time favorite. Here is a rather funny bit:

Mad Men

Madmenlogo

It’s New York in the 1960s, and the men and women who work at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency are some of the top names in the industry. Master manipulator and leading ad man Don Draper is at the top of his game, but there are those who want to see him topple down. Can he maintain his formidable status? Writer and executive producer Matthew Weiner of The Sopranos fame is the man behind this 13-episode original series on AMC. (taken from here)

You probably have seen so many trends from the past being reinvented today like hats, leggings (*oh why*), music and much more. So it’s only trendy to create a series that plays in the old time. And it’s smart too because you can do advertising as hell (i.e. for cigarettes (Lucky Strike) and everybody smokes) and use a more or less obvious Alias Sterling Cooper to promote those Ad companies. Really great job. You should give it a try if you are into the style. I like the mood but sometimes it’s quite boring when they are not at the office. So check out the first 2 episodes and decide because they all are kind of similar, which is not necessarily bad. It’s a summer hole series.

Mental

Mental

This is the first co-production between Fox International Channels (FIC) y Fox Television Studios (FtvS). It’s also the first U.S. English-language drama to be shot by Fox Telecolombia, in Bogota, Colombia. Mental is a drama that explores the complexity of the human brain like never seen before. Every week there is a different patient with a different crisis. Every crisis is a mystery, a confusion, or even a wrong diagnosis from other doctors. Original of UK, Jack Gallagher is a compulsive traveler who has taken a position as the director of a psychiatric hospital in L.A. to be in the same city as his twin sister. Fascinated with the power of the human brain since he was a child, Jack is psychiatrist with unorthodox treatment usingunusual methods for the sake of his patient’s mental health. He is overseen by Nora, the department administrator who is also his ex-lover. For Jack, each case is like a puzzle. Jack has the ability of seeing what every patient has in his head, see the world as them they do and give them a perspective to their own worlds. Unfortunately, much of his colleagues don’t agree with his methods and they will do anything to get him out of the clinic. Day after day he fights against the schizophrenia of his sister and is afraid to end of being one more victim of this serious mental illness. He is ready to break some rules for the well-being of his patients. For him the most important thing is to get into the mind of his patients, seeing reality as they do and make them understand that the doctors are a part of their recovery. Jack thinks that both the doctors and the patients have much more in common than what they are ready to recognize. (taken from here)

If you like House, you’ll like that series too. It is still the first season so it’s not to late to catch up all the events. I didn’t know a lot of actors in this series but they all seem to bee pretty good. It makes use of the prejudices and fears society has when it comes to mental institutions. Things like … they are never going to let me out again …. or …. they’ll give me tons of drugs and electrocute me. Watch from beginning, the first episode is great.

M*A*S*H

MASH

Based on the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker and the 1970 20th Century-Fox movie of the same name, M*A*S*H aired on CBS from September 17, 1972 to February 21st, 1983 for 251 episodes, and has become one of the most celebrated television series in the history of the medium. During its initial season, however, M*A*S*H was in danger of being canceled due to low ratings. The show reached the top ten program list the following year, and never fell out of the top twenty rated programs during the remainder of its run. The final episode of M*A*S*H was a two and one half hour special that attracted the largest audience to ever view a single television program episode. In many ways the series set the standard for some of the best programming to appear later. (taken from here)

Why I like it:

It’s an anti-war series with a lot of humor and a lot of drama.

In a previous post I already told you that great humor can only build up if you have pain and suffering for contrast.

What better contrast could there be than a war. A surreal surrounding with people behaving differently, oddly.

Other than in the Movie where Donald Sutherland (dad of Kiefer Sutherland)  played Hawkeye, the main character, Alan Alda took over for the series and if you ask me that’s what started it off.

A great series and great actors.

don’t forget to rate

Battlestar Galactica

battlestargalactica

The Best Show on Television? Yes, according to Time Magazine, The National Review, Rolling Stone and New York Newsday. Praised by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune and many other publications, Battlestar Galactica won a prestigious Peabody Award in the spring of 2006.
Ronald D. Moore, the producer of Carnivale and writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, boldly re-imagined the original 1978 space opera of humans versus the robotic Cylons. He teamed up with fellow executive producer David Eick on a powerful and dramatic update of the Galactica story.
Gone are the technobabble, disco-themed costumes and Egyptian helmets of the original series. The modern show introduces new elements to the Galactica story. The Cylons have developed human-form models that are indistinguishable from real humans. The Cylons have a monotheistic religion in contrast to the polytheistic religion of the human Colonies. The approach is serious and intense, with a focus on tough political, philosophical and religious issues set in a tale that manages to keep the focus on realistic and not always perfect characters.
In the miniseries, the Cylons launch a massive attack against the humans and wipe out the Twelve Colonies, sending the 47,000 survivors on a desperate search for the fabled 13th colony — Earth.
(taken from here)

Battlestar Galactica is no geeky, star trek like series, no. It is something different. A whole new experience and if you keep watching the series from beginning to end, without spying, I assure you, you’ll love it. Allow yourself to be surprised by the plot and you’ll  witness intrigues, emotions, politics and a lot more….remarkable that a science fiction story that plays in space can be such a drama and such a great, deep and epic plot. It gets people to think and you all know that is a good thing, at least sometimes. One of the reasons the story goes so deep is that there is no good and evil and you constantly ask yourself:

Is evil evil, good evil, evil good, good good?

It is my favorite series right now!! (Try to watch the first season which is a little science focused and enjoy the change the series gets in the following ones. And please don’t watch the end beforehand because you are curious. Trust me! 🙂 )

It’s not about highlights, keep that in mind!

True Blood

True Blood

Alan Ball, creator of Six Feet Under has a sexy, scary new drama that delves into the meticulously-crafted world of novelist Charlaine Harris. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about vampires living amongst them in Louisiana.

Cursed with the ability to listen in on people’s thoughts, she’s also open-minded about the integration of vampires. She is especially intrigued by Bill(Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill’s arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test
(taken from here)

What about a little snack:

OK men I know, that series is awkward close to Twilight but the funny southern accent is quite new and therefore refreshing. The story is kind of …. girly sometimes but overall it’s ok. If you are looking for a gap filler between HIMYM and Dr.House or Psych than that’s your only solid choice right now.

But if you are watching it, throw in some Top Gear episodes (all new) to keep the manly emotions in order!!! And don’t wear pink … no really don’t!  (You can if you are a girl)

RATE!
